Advancing the Gospel
In Philippians 1:12-13 the Bible says, “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually advanced the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is because I am in Christ" (CSB).
Paul was under house arrest guarded by the imperial guard. This was a group composed of around 10,000 handpicked soldiers. It is thought that the guards would change every 4 hours. In this kind of environment, Paul says it has been for the advancement of the gospel. He says that the whole imperial guard has heard that the purpose of his imprisonment was because of Christ. The prisoner preached to a captive audience.
Some of us are discouraged because of our current circumstances. What if we began to see things like Paul did in the book of Philippians? What is God up to in our current circumstances? The Gospel is not chained. Our God is not caught by surprise by anything. This week I want to urge you to focus on advancing the gospel, one person at a time.
