Matthew 14:22-33
What only God can do
In verse 33 the disciples worshipped Jesus because He did only What God could do.
The Background
John the Baptist was beheaded
Feeding of the 5,000 – John says that they tried to make Him King (John 6:15)
He gave the disciples an assignment (v.22)
“Made the disciples” or “compelled” them
We have an assignment (Matthew 28:18-20)
He dismissed the crowd (v.22)
Like a pastor at the front door of the church building
He went on the mountain to pray (v.23)
Harmony in Jesus life and ministry between the crowd, the disciples, alone with the Father.
My life needs to be like that
Have that harmony
The Situation on the boat (v.24)
“Battered” or “tormented”
“Wind was contrary” or “adverse”
Just because you have an assignment that the Lord has given you does not mean you won’t have storms.
Jesus comes out to them walking on the water (vv.25-26)
3-6am
They screamed like a group of middle school girls.
The message of hope in a dark night (v.27)
Peter Walks on the Water (vv.28-31)
Many times people give Peter a hard time because he sank.
But he got out of the boat
“Command me to come” (v.28) Greek word means “the command of a King.” Peter knew that Jesus was King over all nature including the wind and the waves. His word is law and the elements must obey.
For a moment it is like it is just Peter and Jesus there on the water
Peter stopped looking at Jesus and he sank
Jesus took hold of him and saved him (v.31)
Jesus rebuked Peter – I think lovingly (v.31)
When Jesus and Peter got in the boat the wind stopped (v.32)
They worshipped Him (v.33)
They got it. Only God could do that!
Only God could:
Feed 5,000
Walk on water
Have Peter walk on water
Save Peter
Make the wind stop
Only Jesus deserves our love, devotion, worship, and adoration.
If He is who this book says He is we should give our life and our all serving Him.
