Luke 7:36-50
The Woman at Simon’s House
In Luke 7 we have a beautiful picture of how Jesus feels about those who are far from Him.
We see the testimony of a woman who experiences the Saviors forgiveness and demonstrates the extravagant type of love of someone who has experienced forgiveness.
Outline of Luke
Galilean ministry: 4:14–9:50
Jesus on the way to the cross (Luke 9:51)
“When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. “
As we walk through this text, we see how Jesus feels about people who are far from Him, who have made mistakes, who have burned the bridges behind them, who have no hope.
Jesus came to people’s homes (v.36)
We do not know the motive of Simon.
Was it a trap?
Was he wanting to hear more about Jesus?
My story, someone came to my home when I was a ten-year-old boy and shared the Gospel.
Broken people were and are attracted to Jesus (v.37)
This text is good news to those who know what it is like to mess up, to make mistakes, to be where people give up on you.
Broken people were then and still are attracted to Jesus. He is good news for people who are far from God.
I want to worship like this woman (vv.36-38)
Every time I read this text. It moves me to the point of great emotion. This is a beautiful picture of worship. Worship for an audience of one.
Jesus knows our thoughts (v.39)
What a sobering reality
He knows not only our actions but the motivation of our heart
He is concerned with not just what we do, but why we do
A story about you and me (vv.41-43)
We could spend our time talking about the amount of money owed by our standards today.
They both owed debts they could not pay
The debts were forgiven
But the reality of the text is:
You owed a debt you could not pay
He paid a debt He did not owe
He paid it all
An Unlikely Hero (vv.44-48)
Luke highlights unlikely heroes in his gospel
“Do you see this Woman?”
She knew more about forgiveness than the expert in the law.
She experienced forgiveness so she loved much
Consider Our Response (vv.48-50)
Told the woman “Your sins have been forgiven.”
Answering a question that changes our whole life (v.49)
Good News from Jesus (v.50)
